World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Ms JENNY AITCHISON (Maitland—Minister for Roads, and Minister for Regional Transport)—World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, observed annually on 15 June, serves as a global reminder of the importance of safeguarding the rights and dignity of older individuals. In Maitland, our community is fortunate to have dedicated organisations and individuals committed to supporting our seniors. Local groups, such as the Hunter Valley branch of National Seniors Australia and Maitland Senior Citizens and Pensioners Association play a pivotal role in fostering social connections and providing resources to older residents. I thank them for their work in supporting our community. Elder abuse can manifest in various forms, including physical, emotional, financial, and neglect. It's crucial for communities like ours to remain vigilant, ensuring that our seniors are treated with the respect and care they deserve. I encourage all Maitland residents to take a moment to reflect on the contributions of our older citizens and to commit to actions that promote their well-being. Whether it's checking in on an elderly neighbour, supporting local senior initiatives, or educating oneself about the signs of elder abuse, every effort counts. Thank you for standing united in our commitment to protect and honour the elders of our community.
