Sophie Stapleford
Ms JENNY AITCHISON (Maitland—Minister for Roads, and Minister for Regional Transport)—Congratulations to Maitland's own Sophie Stapleford, a survivor, leader and inspiration on and off the football field. Last month, Sophie marked 10 years since undergoing life-saving surgery to remove an aggressive brain tumour. At just 18, she was told she might only have weeks to live, and that she would never play sport again. But with grit, resilience and the support of her community, Sophie returned to football in 2017 and has since become a driving force for Maitland Football Club's women's side. The Magpies recently hosted their annual Brain Cancer Awareness match in Sophie's honour, a tradition that celebrates her journey and raises awareness for a disease that is tragically underfunded, despite being the leading cause of cancer death for young Australians. Sophie has used her platform to speak openly about the impact of brain cancer, reminding us that "if you stay positive, you can get through even the worst days." Her leadership helped guide Maitland FC to an NPLW premiership last season, and her presence continues to lift teammates and the broader community. I commend Sophie Stapleford for her courage, advocacy, and unwavering spirit. We thank you for showing us what true strength looks like.
