Maitland Heritage Projects
Ms JENNY AITCHISON (Maitland—Minister for Roads, and Minister for Regional Transport)—I celebrate Maitland's deep commitment to preserving our past, with two outstanding local projects recognised in the 2025 National Trust Heritage Awards. Maitland City Council's Flood Level 1955 exhibition won top honours in the Events, Exhibitions and Tours category. This recognition came poignantly as Maitland again faced rising floodwaters—reminding us of the enduring legacy of the 1955 disaster. The 70th anniversary program honoured not only the devastation, but also the incredible strength and capacity of our community. The events of that year were a turning point in NSW's emergency response, directly leading to the creation of the SES. Also recognised was Maitland in Focus, a commemorative photo book showcasing more than 40 of our region's most iconic heritage sites. The project was a true community collaboration, driven by Council's Heritage Group in partnership with photographer Justin Reeders, historian Patrick Wilson and generous local property owners. These projects reflect the pride Maitland takes in its rich, resilient history. I thank everyone involved for capturing our stories so beautifully, and for ensuring future generations will understand the journey that shaped our city. Congratulations to all.
