Community Recognition Statement - Maitland Show

22 February 2022

Ms JENNY AITCHISON (Maitland) (16:48): It was a genuine pleasure to attend the official opening of the 160th anniversary of the Maitland Show by Maitland legend Mr Norm Burton, OAM, this past weekend. The Hunter River Agricultural and Horticultural Association's first female president Mrs Margaret Enright, CEO Brett Gleeson and all the directors put on an amazing array of activities for the weekend. The Maitland Show is the premier event for celebrating the diverse agriculture and produce of Maitland and our region. I loved the new slow food exhibition in the McDonald Pavilion, but I was especially inspired by the cookery and arts pavilion with amazing scarecrows—including a Spiderman, a whole stable of rocking horses, and some delightful-looking treats. I was so inspired that I got up early on Sunday morning and baked my first batch of scones since year 7 home science to donate to the Country Women's Association's Little Teapot Cafe. Maitland CWA President Barbara Heckman told me they went down a treat. I feel I have truly graduated to full membership of the CWA, and next year I look forward to entering my famous Maitland marmalade in the show. Grow on, the Maitland Show!
