Media Release - Safety on Spokes road safety campaign launched

Media Release - Safety on Spokes road safety campaign launched Main Image

25 October 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has seen more and more people jumping on bikes across our state to safely socially distance, exercise and travel cheaply.

In response to this increase in riders NSW Labor has joined Bicycle NSW to launch a road safety campaign.

‘Safety on Spokes’ will help educate all road users about bike safety with messaging that covers safe passing, heavy-vehicle safety issues, road rules, safety tips and door-zone bike lanes.

Jenny Aitchison MP, Member for Maitland and Jo Haylen MP, Shadow Minister for Active Transport attended the launch along with representatives from Bicycle NSW, the NRMA, and other stakeholders and parliamentarians.

“Whether we’re driving, walking or riding on the road, no one wants to be involved in an accident, and this campaign is a great reminder of the safety precautions we all need to take,” said Ms Aitchison.

“I am proud to join Bicycle NSW, NRMA and other road safety advocates to highlight the importance of all road users doing the right thing.”

Jo Haylen MP, Shadow Minister for Active Transport, said that the need to socially distance had resulted in lots of people dusting off their bikes and getting back out on the road.

“For many of us the road rules have changed since we got our drivers’ licences or last rode our bikes,” Ms Haylen said.

“This campaign is such an important reminder about the steps we can all take - drivers, riders and walkers - to keep everyone safe on the road.

“I congratulate Bicycle NSW for partnering with Suez to make this happen given that the Liberal Government failed to provide the public information campaign needed to help protect all road users.”
