MEDIA RELEASE - NORTH CROPPA SECTION OF NEWELL HIGHWAY NEXT IN LINE FOR SAFETY UPGRADE

Work on a major safety upgrade of a five-kilometre section of the Newell Highway between Moree and Boggabilla will ramp up next week, delivering safer journeys for road users in northern NSW.

The Minns Labor Government is investing $12.57 million to improve the North Croppa Creek section of the Newell Highway, about 71 kilometres north of Moree.

Due to be completed in early 2025, weather permitting, the final project will include:

  • a new heavy-duty road pavement
  • a one-metre wide centre line
  • upgrades to three intersections.

Following completion of early preparation work, main road construction and earthworks will start on Monday 22 January.

Work hours will be 7am to 6.30pm on weekdays with changed traffic conditions in place including local intersection and lane closures and a reduced 40 km/h speed limit in some areas.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison said:

“Road users travel long distances in regional NSW and important upgrades such as this help to ensure they make it safely to their destinations.

“The road safety improvements the Minns Labor Government is proud to be delivering at North Croppa Creek will help separate oncoming lanes of traffic and prevent serious head-on crashes.

“In addition to this, we’re also upgrading three intersections at Oaklea, Karuah and Limebon Roads, and these upgrades will provide safer access to the highway, which helps prevent crashes.”

Labor’s spokesperson for the Northern Tablelands electorate Peter Primrose MLC said:

“This important work builds on further upgrade work the Minns Labor Government is undertaking on the Newell Highway between Narrabri and Moree.

“Once completed, road users will enjoy a safer, smoother ride on the Newell Highway all the way from Narrabri to the Queensland border.”
