Media Release - Finally some progress for Victoria Street station

27 March 2017

Member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison MP is pleased that finally some progress has been made on the long awaited Victoria Street Railway Station project that will improve access for people with disabilities, limited mobility, parents with prams, and tourists with luggage.
The Department of Transport for NSW has released detailed planning documents that assess the environmental impacts of the project and are now available online at www.transport.nsw.gov.au/projects/tap
The proposed improvements at Victoria Street Station include:
  • Three new lifts
  • New canopies for weather protection
  • Refurbishment of the heritage platform building
  • Improvements to the interchange areas
  • Sheltered bike racks
  • New wayfinding signage
  • Upgrades to lighting and CCTV surveillance.
Transport for NSW is also seeking feedback on the proposed improvements. Feedback may be sent to [email protected] or to Transport Access Program – Victoria Street, Principal Manager Environmental Impact Assessment Transport for NSW, Locked Bag 6501, St Leonards NSW 2065 by 5pm Friday 7 April 2017.
The Transport for NSW project team will be at Victoria Street Station this Thursday 30 March between 3pm and 7pm to answer any questions local residents may have on the project. If you are unable to attend but would like to talk with the team, please call the Project Infoline on 1800 684 490 or email [email protected]
Quotes attributable to the Member for Maitland, Jenny Aitchison MP
“Accessibility upgrades to Victoria Street Station have been promised under two Liberal Transport Ministers and by the former Liberal Member for Maitland.
"I have written to the minister and asked questions on notice about this issue.
"It's good to see them at last coming good on their promises after a concerted campaign by Labor and the local community.
“For many members in the community, no lift or ramp access means they can’t access public transport at all.
“A lift or ramp for people with disabilities, the elderly or parents with prams is not a luxury upgrade but a necessity.
“Every commuter deserves to have access to the NSW rail network – but for thousands of people with disabilities, elderly passengers and travelling parents that sadly isn’t the case.”
