Media Release - Berejiklian Government's long weekend tourism campaign runs into track work

01 June 2020

Labor is calling for extra bus services for visitors to the Central Coast, Newcastle and the Hunter amid concern trackwork could derail a much-needed boost to regional tourism this long weekend.
Labor Shadow Minister for Investment and Tourism and Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison said, “Tourism operators have missed out on months of income due to fires and COVID-19.
“With easing restrictions and a new NSW tourism campaign, this could be the first big weekend in months for tourism operators around the State".
“However, trackwork will put pressure on transport services around the Central Coast, Newcastle and the Hunter.”
Buses will replace intercity trains this long weekend between:
  • Newcastle and Central
  • Newcastle, Scone and Dungog
Labor Shadow Minister for Regional Transport and Central Coast MP David Harris said: “The long weekend is a perfect time to get out and about in NSW. Public transport users who visit our regions need to be confident they won’t be stranded or delayed.
“That doesn’t just mean replacement bus services. The Berejiklian Government needs to provide extra bus services to cope with increased demand. It’s important to make sure anyone making the trip to regional NSW can stay safe and practice social distancing on public transport.”
