Media Release - Baird Government secretly lists new mobile speed traps

11 August 2016

The Baird Government has secretly added two new mobile speed camera locations in Maitland as fine revenue in NSW reaches record highs.

Motorists have received no warning of the new speed traps, which were quietly added last Friday afternoon to an obscure sub-section of the Centre for Road Safety’s website. View the update here.

The new mobile speed camera locations in Maitland include:

  • Lindesay Street, East Maitland

  • Raymond Terrace Road, East Maitland

The new locations come on top of the Liberal-National Government collecting record revenue from speed and red-light camera offences which topped $18.6 million for the month of June.

With the road toll in NSW increasing to 244 for 2016, Labor can also reveal the Government has cut its contribution to road safety and education programs.

In response to a Question on Notice in the Parliament, the Liberal-National Government confirmed it had cut its contribution to the Community Road Safety Fund by $15.5 million last year.

The Government is increasingly relying on fines from motorists to fund road safety.

The two new mobile speed camera locations came into effect on Monday August 1, while a number of locations were also removed from the list.

Quotes attributable to Member for Maitland, Jenny Aitchison

“It’s appalling that the Government thinks that an upload to an obscure page on a Government website can count as a public announcement.

“If the Government wanted to slow motorists in Maitland down then it wouldn’t announce the two new mobile speed camera locations in secret.“

“Road safety should be about slowing people down, not raising revenue.”

Quotes attributable to Shadow Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Jodi McKay

“The road toll is increasing; the focus should be on slowing people down, not raising revenue.

“It’s disgraceful that the Government has cut its contribution to funding road safety programs in the face of an increasing road toll.

“The Minister should be fighting for every dollar to fund road safety and curb the needless loss of life.
