Thanks to Labor, the new Maitland Public Hospital will be public.
NSW Labor is pleased to see that after 7 years of hard work by Labor Member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison, the wider union movement and the community, the new Maitland Hospital will remain public.
It’s a great credit to the community that today the Minister for Health, the Hon. Brad Hazzard will not be standing with a private not-for-profit company executive when he turns the sod on this important piece of infrastructure.
The sad part is that it took 8 years for the Liberal/National Government to get to this point after promising a new hospital for Maitland back in 2011.
Today should not just be about infrastructure, it is about the patients, the nurses and doctors and other allied health workers who will work in this hospital.
Only a Daley Labor Government will deliver hundreds more nurses in regional NSW through new nurse to patient ratios, to bring staffing levels in regional hospitals to the same level as the big city hospitals. We will improve patient care and reduce wait times with mandated nurse to patient ratios in emergency departments and paediatric wards, employing thousands of new nurses.
Only a Daley Labor Government will provide an extra 250 new hospital security guards with additional special constable powers so that the people protecting our hospitals have the same powers as the people protecting our parliament.
A Daley Labor Government will always put people before profits, and hospitals before stadiums.
