AITCHISON WELCOMES EDUCATION MAINTENANCE BOOST

Local Member for Maitland, Jenny Aitchison has today welcomed the announcement by the NSW Government that they will provide Hunter schools with a funding injection of $50 million to tackle the critical maintenance backlogs.

Last week Ms Aitchison and Labor’s Shadow Minister for Education, Jihad Dib spoke to concerned parents at Rutherford Public School and Ms Aitchison also took the opportunity of taking the Shadow Minister to Gillieston Heights Public School to see first-hand the state of the school.

Data from earlier this year shows that in the electorate of Maitland there are 21 schools with outstanding maintenance requests totaling almost $14million.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald MLC has advised that the NSW Government will provide $50million to Hunter schools and that a list of schools will be announced next month.

Ms Aitchison is calling on the local community to share their views and concerns about their local school either by commenting or private message on Facebook or by email maitland@parliament.nsw.gov.au

The extent of the school maintenance backlog has uncovered an appalling failure by the Liberal-National Government to deliver high quality classrooms and education facilities in NSW.
