STRATEGY FOR REPORT RELEASE INTO SEXUAL ASSAULT AT UNIVERSITIES WELCOMED

NSW Labor is today welcoming the release strategy for the Human Rights Commission’s report into sexual assault at universities.

Recently Labor met with Kate Jenkins, the Sex Discrimination Commissioner, to ensure that the report’s results would be released for individual universities and to confirm that recommendations would be made.

Ms Jenkins has today responded positively to concerns raised about the availability of support services and the impact of the report on students doing exams and has now chosen a launch date of 1 August 2017.

The Commission will also be working to ensure that universities have appropriate services available to students at this time.

Labor thanks the Commissioner for her detailed and positive consideration of the many issues involved for students who have contributed and shared their information about this distressing issue.

Labor urges all universities to ensure that appropriate support services are available to survivors to ensure that they are not adversely impacted by the release of the report and potential triggers it may contain.

Quotes attributable to Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Jenny Aitchison

"It's great to see the Human Rights Commission has been working so respectfully with survivors of sexual assault on university campuses to ensure they are resourced to deal with the release of this report.

"For too long survivors of sexual assault have not been properly assisted by universities.

“This report will provide the foundation for a better approach which should include proper consent training, mandatory reporting and response policies in all universities.

“Labor urges all universities to ensure they have appropriate support services in place to ensure survivors receive the best assistance in dealing with information that may provide triggers when the report is released.”

Quotes attributable to Shadow Minister for Women, Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism, Shadow Minister for Disability Services, Sophie Cotsis

“Labor stands by all students who suffer sexual assault and violence on campus. We need to ensure that the university experience of all students is a positive one, regardless of their sex, ability, ethnicity and religious background.

“Universities have a duty of care to ensure the safety of students on campus.”

Quotes attributable to Shadow Parliamentary Secretary and Member for Summer Hill, Jo Haylen

“Students who have participated in this report have already been through unimaginable pain and distress. It is good to see that the Commission has listened to students who were concerned about the timing of the report.

“What students need and want to hear now is a guarantee of real action from universities on release of the report."
