Queen's Birthday Honours Recipients

I congratulate five Maitland people who were recognised for their contributions to the community in the Queen's Birthday Honours List 2016. Firstly, Major Carl Christie of Ashtonfield, was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his voluntary involvement over the past 20 years at Fort Scratchley, helping to preserve the history of our nation and region. Mr John Hakes of East Maitland was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his involvement with the St Vincent De Paul Society over 20 years, especially the innovative and award-winning Coachstop Caravan Park project in Maitland, which provides care and support to some of our most vulnerable residents.

Mr Doug Pyle of Bolwarra Heights was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his regular contribution to Maitland's cultural and entertainment life over a remarkable 70-year period. Mr Frank Higgs of East Maitland was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his extensive involvement in the Mai-Wel Group to support people with disabilities over a number of decades. Mr Barry Palmer of Bolwarra Heights became an Officer of the Order of Australia for his involvement with Lions International, through global leadership and domestic executive roles.
